I wanted to come back to this beautiful Champollion week that we shared together, in Paris and virtually, from May 16 to 20 and that our Society had the pleasure and honor of co-organizing with the National Library of France, the Academy of Inscriptions and Belles-Lettres, Sorbonne University, and the WRITINGS program (Ifao-Sorbonne). Many members and friends of the SFE were present and I also had the pleasure of meeting some of you from all over France.
This intense week was inaugurated at the Sorbonne on the Jussieu campus, in the presence of the Ambassador of Egypt, His Excellency Ehab Ahmed Badawy, with a day of conferences devoted to a vast panorama of the archaeological advances of the last twenty years in Egypt.
On Tuesday 17, it was possible to visit the Champollion exhibition guided by the curators themselves as well as the installation ScanPyramids at the Cité de l'architecture, reopened for the occasion. We then met for a cocktail at 18e floor of one of the towers of the BnF, at the Belvedere.
On Wednesday 18, after the fascinating symposium organized by Vanessa Desclaux at the BnF, "Champollion and the texts: current affairs", we met for a special session of the SFE, in front of an exceptionally large audience, both in the auditorium and from a distance: Claude Rilly and Dimitri Laboury gave us two delightful and stimulating lectures, the first on the decipherment of Meroitic and his own adventures as a decipherer and ethno-linguist, the second on the literate skills of Egyptian artists , throwing quite a new light on a particular social world; we ended up with the traditional SFE drink in an unusual and sumptuous setting, where some of us played the book signing game. These conferences will of course be published in the BSFE and are visible on the SFE website.
On Thursday, May 19, we took a step aside to study “Champollion in context”, and the scholarly practices of the early nineteenth century in which the intellectual and social approach of Jean-François Champollion was integrated. We also looked towards the ancient and modern reception of hieroglyphs, in the West and in the Arab world, as well as towards the process of deciphering, by comparing with the adventure of Vendries and Chadwick during the deciphering of Linear B. Like the colloquium of Wednesday, the recording of this event is still visible on the BnF website (https://www.bnf.fr/fr/agenda/champollion-en-contexte-dechiffrer-les-hieroglyphes-construire-un-grand-savant-au-xixe#bnf--tout-le-cycle-autour-de-l-exposition-l-aventure-champollion-).
Finally, on Friday May 20, the Academy of Inscriptions and Belles-Lettres honored the Egyptological research carried out in connection with this venerable institution, in the very places where Jean-François Champollion presented his famous Letter to Monsieur Dacier relating to the alphabet of phonetic hieroglyphs.
I really want to thank all the institutions, the colleagues and all the people of goodwill who made it possible to organize these days, but also all the participants who contributed to the success of this moment and I have the pleasure of sharing with you some of the photographs you have taken.
This Champollion year has only just begun: see you soon!
Sincerely, Chloé Ragazzoli, President
